Pregnant? Getting Acupuncture Should Be High on Your List

Pregnancy is a remarkable experience that has a profound effect on your physical and emotional well-being, and you want to enjoy every moment. But between the extreme exhaustion, nausea, and various aches and pains, you may find it hard to enjoy your pregnancy.

On top of that, pregnancy comes with a lot of dos and don’ts, making it hard to manage the physical symptoms that dampen the experience.

If you’re pregnant, getting acupuncture should be high on your list of dos for managing common symptoms

At Legacy Pain and Regenerative Medicine, our chiropractic physician and family nurse practitioner, Dr. Trace Alexander, is certified in acupuncture. He combines traditional medical treatments with alternative therapies to ease pain and discomfort and improve overall health.

In this month’s blog post, we want to talk about acupuncture and how it can relieve some of the discomforts that come with your pregnancy so you can fully appreciate the life-changing event.

A little about acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice focused on rebalancing your life force — energy or qi — in the body. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) blockages or imbalances in the flow of your life force causes health problems like aches and pains, nausea, and fatigue.

By inserting thin needles into specific areas of the body called meridians, acupuncture unblocks the flow of your life force, restoring balance and wellness.

Research has found that acupuncture needles stimulate the nervous system, triggering the release of chemicals that ease pain and promote a general sense of well-being.

Acupuncture for pregnancy

The physical changes that occur during pregnancy cause a lot of uncomfortable symptoms. But, traditional medical interventions like pain medications, even drugs available over-the-counter (OTC), aren’t safe to take.

Acupuncture is a safe alternative for easing pregnancy symptoms and discomforts such as:

Acupuncture may even help manage labor pain, serving as a nonpharmacological pain management option so you can have a natural birth.

What to expect

We customize acupuncture treatments to address specific concerns, so no treatment is like another. After gathering information about your health and pregnancy, and performing a physical exam, we talk to you about acupuncture and how it can help.

We then insert the needles into specific parts of the body to get the desired results. You may feel some temporary discomfort during acupuncture treatment, but we do our best to make sure you remain as comfortable as possible.

We leave the needles in place for a set period of time while you relax in our treatment room. You can resume your normal routine after we remove the needles.

Though results vary, you may feel relief from your symptoms and a sense of calmness and clarity after your acupuncture treatment.

Symptoms change throughout pregnancy, but getting regular acupuncture treatments can help you feel your best during the entire experience.
